How We Started
Student Review was born out of a necessity to alleviate the academic pressures faced by our Founder and CEO, Josh Reissig, during his Physician Assistant training. Josh attended the Interservice Physician Assistant Program through the US Army in San Antonio, Texas. Like many students, he spent his days highlighting lecture presentations, creating handwritten notecards, and studying whenever time allowed. This process was time-consuming and relied on less effective study methods.
Recognizing the inefficiency of this traditional study cycle, Josh sought a better solution. Finding no existing tools that could streamline the creation of personalized study materials without relying on others’ notes, he decided to develop his own. Thus, Student Review was created to provide students with a more efficient and effective way to study, enabling them to focus on learning and mastering their material.
20K Handwritten Note Cards
Here is a personal snapshot of Josh’s notecards from his time in PA school—20,000 handwritten cards. According to a recent study by the AAMC, medical students spend 30-40 hours per week creating study materials. This is the problem. The time invested in making these note cards is largely wasted due to the passive nature of the review process. Research shows that passive review methods result in only 30% retention of information after a week. This inefficiency highlights the need for more effective study tools, which is what inspired the creation of Student Review.
Through my experience, I discovered that actively engaging with my notecards—by seeing a term, contemplating the answer, and then providing it—significantly improved my information retention. Scientific studies support this, showing that active recall techniques lead to 80% retention of information after one week.
